CCDS Interview with Patrick
Daniel PughOn January
15th and
16th, 2011, the CCDS dance company attended the Dance Masters of America,
Chapter 17 workshop. The faculty was well rounded - we enjoyed classes in
Tap, Ballet, Modern, and Jazz. The highlights of the weekend definitely
included the jazz classes offered by Patrick Pugh. Patrick was wonderful
with students of all ages, challenging each level while also building the self
esteem of each dancer in his classes. Not only was Patrick
an inspiring teacher at DMA, but he is also breathtaking to watch. Patrick
has had the thrill of touring with Rasta Thomas' Bad Boys of Dance, and
currently he is enrolled as an English major at Troy University, in Alabama,
where he is a member of Troy Dance Repertory Ensemble. After our
weekend at DMA, Patrick agreed to answer a few questions, exclusively for CCDS!
CCDS: At what age did you start dancing?
PDP: I began dancing at
age 11, with Ilka Doubek at Litchfield Dance Arts Academy in Pawleys Island,
South Carolina.
CCDS: Did you ever feel self-concious about
being a boy in dance? If so, how did you overcome the feeling?
PDP: Absolutely! However,
with age and maturity comes a certain enlightenment. I realized that dance was
my passion, and some people never find their passion in life. All things shrink
to obscurity when your life's mission becomes clear.
CCDS: What is your favorite type of dance
class to teach? And what about to take?
PDP: My favorite
class to teach is lyrical. It's the perfect combination of robust ballet
technique and emotion; therefore, my favorite class to take is Suzi Taylor's
lyrical class at Steps on Broadway. CCDS:
Who would be your ultimate dream dance partner?
PDP: My dream dance
partner would be Melissa Hough from Houston Ballet. She is the archetype of a
versatile dancer.
CCDS: What would people be surprised to find
in your dance bag?
PDP: Nothing
interesting here. Ballet shoes, socks, extra t-shirt, and gum.
CCDS: What is your proudest moment in your
dance career, so far?
PDP: My proudest
moment was performing at the Joyce Theater in NYC with Rasta Thomas's Bad Boys
of Dance. We toured all over the world, but performing for my family and friends
in NYC at the famed Joyce was icing on the cake.
CCDS: What advice can you give our kids that
might want to pursue a career in dance?
PDP:
Ballet class, ballet class, and more ballet class! Also, don't be afraid
to audition -- go out for everything! If nothing else, you'll meet people and
get your face in front of casting directors and agents.
Many thanks to Patrick! The students, staff,
and parents at CCDS appreciate the time you took to answer our questions.
We hope to have the chance to dance with
you again! |
